Ireland 2nd in Home Internationals

Southport 18/19 June 2005

The Irish team of Mark McInerney, Ronan McInerney (c), Ed Cunningham, Simon Williams & Gerard Healy finished runner-up to England in the Home Internationals. This was a disappointing result as the English swept aside the Irish in the final match decider 5-0. Ireland had beaten Wales and Scotland on the first day 4.5 - 0.5 and 4-0 respectively. But England did not drop a game against Ireland on Sunday morning to once again leave the Irish disappointed by their huge underachievement. The team was certainly strong enough to beat England, and even though the lawns were very poor for this high class event, it does not excuse the performance which has been seen too often in recent years. For the record, the English team did not drop a match throughout.
