GENERAL
All entries must be accompanied by the full fee. All entrants must be Associates of the C.A.I. or an affiliated national Croquet Association. All tournaments shall be conducted according to the C.A.I. Regulations for Tournaments. Requests for leave may be made (in writing) only at the time of entry; or, if the Manager allows, at the start of the event. No other applications will be considered. A tardy player is liable to forfeit the game. Players must report to the Manager each day on arrival and on quitting the ground. If the Manager is not available, the displayed written schedule of play is deemed to be definitive. Every player bears the final responsibility for ensuring that he or she plays at the correct handicap. Playing at the wrong handicap can result in disqualification! HOOP-SETTING Unless otherwise advertised, the width of each hoop between the uprights shall not exceed the diameter of the balls used by more than one eighth of an inch (3.3mm), or less than three thirty seconds of an Inch (2.5 mm). If advertised in advance, the permitted clearance may be one sixteenth of an inch (1.7mm). If, during a game, any hoop shall be found to be incorrectly set, the setting shall be immediately corrected, except when such correction would materially affect the state of the game, but: (a) if at any time a ball is found to touch both uprights of a hoop in such a way that it cannot be played fairly under Law 32 (a) (xii), the hoop setting must be corrected and the ball replaced in the jaws as the referee shall decide, and : (b) if after any stroke a ball moved in that stroke is found to touch both uprights of a hoop in such a way that it cannot be played fairly entry under Law 32 (a)(xii), the striker may ordinarily replay that stroke following the correction of the hoop setting. Hoops must be firm and freshly set at least once a day. In longer events the hoops should be moved after 3 days of play. The Tournament Referee is responsible for hoop-setting. TIME LIMITS The Manager may temporarily stop a game if the game double-banked on the same court is within 10 minutes of the time limit. The players are jointly responsible for having the time called correctly. If they fail to do so, they must abide by the decision of the Manager. A player who falls to name his or her doubles partner on the entry form shall be liable to be paired with another player at the Manager's discretion. CONDUCT Shoes or boots worn on the courts must have flat soles without raised heels. Players while in play must wear predominantly white clothing. The Manager may allow non-white rainwear. If any player or spectator behaves in a such a way as to disrupt the tournament or bring the game into disrepute, the Manager may direct him or her to quit the vicinity of the courts. Spectators should be aware of the progress of nearby games, so as not to distract the players. Specifically, do not walk across a player's line of aim. HANDICAPS 1. A List of all handicaps to be circulated to C.A.I. affiliated Clubs and Council monthly during the season (April to October): this List to be made available to the members of each Club and continuously displayed where possible. 2. This List is intended only as a guide to official handicaps. 3. At all times it is the responsibility of the individual players to familiarise themselves with the most recently updated List and where they are aware of any apparent errors, to inform the C.A.I. handicappers or other appropriate officers of such. 4. Errors or discrepancies in the published Handicap or Event Lists will not have any validating effect. 5. At all times it is the responsibility of the individual players to ensure they are playing off the correct official handicap. 6. Subject only to rule 7, the correct handicap that a player will play off for any event is the latest official handicap that has been assigned to that player before play commences on the day of that event. Thus any adjustments to a handicap since the last official List was published will take precedence over the listed handicap. 7. The Tournament Handicapper may adjust a handicap during the course of an event (but not during the course of a game or after a semi-final) where the following two circumstances both apply. First, that they were unfamiliar with the player's recent play (as defined by a period in excess of three months). Second, that there is a significant difference between the player's performance as against his/her handicap. This is defined by an apparent difference of at least 4 for handicaps of over 10, and of at least 3 for handicaps between 3 and 10. Handicaps of less than 3 cannot be adjusted under this rule. 8. A player who plays off any handicap other than as defined in rule 6 will be deemed to playing off an incorrect handicap, which circumstances shall be governed by rule 9. 9. Where it becomes known that a player is playing off a handicap higher than his/her official handicap during an event, he/she shall be disqualified. Games that have already been completed will not be over-ruled. 10. Visiting Players who do not have an official Irish handicap will play off their latest official home club handicap but always subject to rule 7. 11. Where a player holds both an Irish handicap and an Overseas' handicap, then the Irish handicap will apply if there is a difference. For the purpose of this rule and as far as possible The C.A.I. handicappers will make immediate adjustments if appropriate to the Irish Handicap to take into account such difference or any recommendations that Overseas Handicappers may have made. It will however remain at the discretion of the Official C.A.I. Handicappers to retain a differential if this is deemed necessary for the consistency of the Irish handicapping system. 12. The C.A.I. will appoint a sub-committee panel of at least two official Handicappers whose responsibility it is to determine all handicaps. 13. Handicaps of all affiliated members will be continuously assessed and altered whenever deemed necessary. However it is the policy as far as possible to link handicap changes to performance at tournament events. It is therefore hoped to prevent an unnecessary proliferation of potentially muddling handicap changes. 14. The handicap of a player is determined by the opinion of the Official Handicappers of the C.A.I. whose duty it is to become familiar with a player's performance. 15. Where possible, this should be done through direct observation of play. If this cannot or has not been done, the C.A.I. handicappers may rely on the advice of individual Club Handicappers. 16. To this end, each Club will appoint their own official to liase with the C.A.I. Handicappers. It is the responsibility of these individual officers to bring to the attention of the C.A.I. Handicappers, any player whom they believe merits a handicap change. 17. When a handicap is changed, the player will be notified by an official card, which will be posted to the last known address where available. Notwithstanding the receipt or otherwise of such official card, rule 3 and 6 shall apply. 18. All Handicaps must be ratified by Council. 19.
