None of us who knew Redmond could ever believe his age -- he would have been 86 this April -- and how could we when he looked and behaved like a much younger man. He was still, as ever, driving daily to his office to continue his work as a consultant engineer and it is just a few years ago that he gave up his windsurfing and water skiing only to try hang gliding.
Of course he was a very keen and good croquet player and it was through croquet that many of us were fortunate enough to get to know him. He was a wonderful man -- always courteous and gracious, quick to laugh and full of enthusiasm with a great zest for life. To play with him was always a pleasure because he so obviously enjoyed the game and was a true sportsman. His skill and enthusiasm remained with him till the end; he was one of only two members (the other was Irene) who played on all of the 10 Saturdays in our last “Turkey “competition .
He was one of the first members of Herbert Park Croquet Club and was always a strong supporter of the club, serving as a committee member for many years right up to his death and contributing not just with good ideas but also by doing all sorts of jobs quietly and thoroughly: only last December he turned up one Saturday with a roll of felt and used it to repair the roof of the shelter!
His death while on holiday on the Red Sea coast of Egypt came as a great shock but he had lived his long life to the full and greatly enriched the lives of those who knew him.
