This year's match between CAI (Nathaniel Healy, Jane Morrison, Conor Broderick, Sandy Greig, Dave McGrath and Myles McWeeney) and the CA (Brian Havill, Jim Field, Kevin Carter, Paul Hetherington, Richard Peperell and Sophie McGlen) was played at Surbiton in London, a club famed for its welcoming atmosphere - and excellent lawns.
Although the weather forecast was decidedly mixed we escaped with only one heavy shower on Saturday and for the most part, play was in glorious sunshine. Games were very competitive and by the end of play on Saturday the score was 8 - 7 in favour of the home team. However, two wins in the doubles on Sunday morning brought the score to 9 - 9 and in the final round of singles on Sunday afternoon the Irish won 5 out of six, leaving the final score at 14 - 10. This is the first time we have won in the last three years and was all the sweeter for that.
The Maugham Quaitch for the best individual player went to Sandy Greig, who won all his 5 games.
The CA were a gracious host and the CA players went out of their way to be hospitable, covering any expenses of the Saturday night meal that fell outside the CA remit. Surbiton also lived up to its reputation, laying on splendid lunches and having first-class lawns - George Nobel was to be seen in the early morning of each day resetting hoops. Our thanks to them all.
