This year, 2012, Herbert Park Croquet Club celebrated its 25th birthday with
a party, and games, on the lawn. Currently there are 36 members including
three who are Honorary. We would like more members and so if you or anyone
else would be interested in joining you would be most welcome. Our annual
subscription is €70 and that includes the contribution to the CAI; it is unlikely to
change much, if at all, in the coming year and so will remain excellent value as
all the equipment is provided by the Club and our season runs from the start of
April to mid-December.
Highlights of this year include the visit of our friends from Canterbury,UK, and,
for a few of us, visits to the Argideen Vale Club in Timoleague and also to the
new Club in Waterville. The match against Canterbury, the 15th of the series,
was the closest ever as the two sides were level on points as well as in games
and it required a shootout at the peg for Herbert Park to emerge as the winners.
As usual the hospitality of our friends in Timoleague was wonderful and the Golf
Croquet was enjoyed by all.
The weekend of 6/7 October might not seem the best time to have a Golf
Croquet Tournament to mark the birth of a new Croquet Club in Waterville but
the weather, especially on the Saturday, was good and the site of the lawns
beside the lake was revealed in all its beauty. There is now a new, well-drained,
lawn together with one on a putting green. Leo Dungan most successfully
organized the tournament and had helped a great deal to get the Club started.
A Herbert Park member, Robert Barklie, was the winner and Simon Williams the
Our Annual Tournament successfully took place as usual over nine days in
mid-July. In August a team from Carrickmines visited us for a return match that
ended with the teams level on games but with Herbert Park ahead on points.
Unfortunately the match against TCD did not take place this year
Apart from that there was plenty of play throughout the season of both
Association and Golf croquet.
